Taking the leap from a push bike to an electric bike is one of the biggest decisions you can make if you have a penchant for cycling. Whether you’re using a bike for your daily commute, weekend adventures, fitness, or a combination of all three, an e-bike represents one of the most substantial investments you can make for the betterment of your wellbeing.

However, with the e-bike market having exploded in recent years, there is an abundance of choice available to discerning cyclists. Therefore, when it comes to choosing your first e-bike, it’s not surprising if this feels overwhelming.

This guide looks to help you navigate the world of electric bikes which, at first glance, seems complex, and make this process infinitely easier for you, whatever your ambitions for your investment.

The Basics of an E-Bike

Before delving into the specific technical features, it’s important to understand the fundamentals of an electric bike. At a very basic level, an e-bike is essentially a standard, traditional bike but equipped with an electric motor and battery system.

Contrary to popular belief, this doesn’t mean you stop pedalling; in fact, it’s quite the opposite. The motor provides a level of assistance as you pedal, making hills less challenging to ride and longer distances inherently more achievable.

One of the biggest benefits of electric bikes is their versatility. You have the freedom to choose how much assistance you want or need, scaling up or down as you progress through your ride. This makes e-bikes perfect for riders of all fitness levels and cycling experience.

With that in mind, it’s important to answer a few questions before you begin browsing electric bicycles online:

  • What will you be mainly using your e-bike for?
  • What type of e-bike motor will you need?
  • By extension, what e-bike battery will support you?
  • How much are you willing to spend on your e-bike?

What Will You Primarily Use Your E-Bike For?

The first step in choosing your perfect e-bike is objectively assessing how you plan to use it.

If you’re looking for a reliable bike that can support your commute, or are after something to take on long-distance rides, or something that can tick both boxes, this all influences your choice of e-bike.

Consider your typical journey distances, as your battery and motor size will also need to be considered (more on these later). Think about the terrain you’re most likely to encounter, whether it’s flat roads, rolling hills, or off-road trails, as this can warrant choosing a specific make and model of e-bike.

While your long-term goal may be to improve your fitness, your current fitness level and mobility are also vital factors. E-bikes can be a great route back into cycling after a long time away, good options for recovering from short- or long-term injuries, or simply giving yourself a more accessible option that a standard push bike may fall short of.

Choose the Right E-Bike Motor

Electric bike motors come in two primary configurations:

  1. Hub motors (found in either the front or rear wheels) – operated purely by the cadence of the crank, not reliant on pressure. Power kicks in at around ¼ of a rotation.
  2. Mid-drive motors (found in the bike’s bottom bracket) offer a more natural-feeling power delivery, with output that depends on the pressure applied to the cranks, providing instant acceleration.

Hub motors are ideal for commuting and casual riding, and are often found on more affordable e-bike models. Mid-drive motors provide better weight distribution and tend to be found on more premium models, supporting off-road and mountain biking a lot more.

E-Bike Batteries and Framing

The e-bike battery is essentially its fuel tank, and choosing the right capacity is vital.

Battery capacity is measured in watt-hours (Wh), with most modern e-bikes offering between 300Wh and 750Wh.

For typical UK commuting distances of between 10 and 15 miles, a 400-500Wh battery provides plenty of range with power to spare. If you’re planning longer rides on average, or live in particularly hilly areas like the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District, or Chilterns, consider higher capacity e-bike batteries. Rider weight, weather, and assistance level all use battery power, not just the motor itself.

Most quality e-bikes offer 40-80 miles of range in a single charge, but it’s wise to plan for the lower end of estimates, especially in colder months when battery performance naturally decreases.

E-bike frame size and style also influence your overall comfort and enjoyment. Tried-and-tested diamond frames are geometrically consistent for experienced cyclists, while step-through frames provide an easier mounting and dismounting experience, which might suit different riders with mobility considerations.

Using a proper rider sizing guide ensures your e-bike fits correctly, preventing discomfort and potential injury.

How Much to Budget for an E-Bike

E-bikes are an investment in yourself, your health and wellbeing. While entry-level basic e-bikes, suitable for most everyday commutes, start around £800-£1,200, premium models with more advanced and cutting-edge features can surpass the £3,000 mark.

It all depends on how much you are willing to spend factoring in your expected usage, terrain, and accessories like helmets, locks, maintenance, storage, and so on. Our comprehensive bike buying guide can help you understand these additional considerations.
